3 Creative Ways to Decorate Your Dorm Room

Nov 9, 2018 by

College dorm rooms often resemble a white prison cell with bunk beds and desks when you first walk into it. But with some creativity and effort, you can turn your bland room into something more livable.

Making your dorm look and feel like home can be a struggle — especially when it is shared with one or two others. College is supposed to provide the best years of your life, so take advantage of the first time you have the liberty to decorate your own space. Self expression is essential when decorating your dorm room. The best option to making it feel like a space you connect with by finding the right ways to navigate dorm decoration and align your style! Here are some key tips to making your dorm room feel like home:

Art is your friend

Find art that both you and your roommates can enjoy. You don’t want to cover your dorm room in overly personal art or movie posters that not everyone likes. It is always best to shop for things that align with your creative taste, but don’t make your roommate feel out of place. Connect with them before move in and send pictures and ask them what their style is before you head out and purchase art.

Picking art for your dorm can even become a good getting-to-know-you activity for you and your roommate. You could find some graphics or create some you both like and then purchase some custom printed banners to put on your wall! Art is a great way to give some color, character, and uniqueness to your shared space.

Get small space friendly furniture and appliances

Feeling at home in a space that doesn’t feel like it’s being used to its best ability is where many college students go wrong. It is important to look at multi-functional furniture that can fold or just take up a small amount of space. Ikea is a great place to shop for chairs that look cute, but also can fold up to save space. Getting a bathroom cart is a good idea as well. This way, you can keep your bathroom essentials organized and all in the same space. A bathroom cart will also look cute and is super portable!

Make sure to loft your bed as well, if that is an option. This leaves so much more room for a desk and even a tv and futon. Lofting your bed is a must in college so you can get the best use out of your space. Trying to cram everything you own in a small space without making more room will leave you anxious and stressed in your own space.

Go bold and cover up blank space

This is one of the fun parts about a college dorm room. Find a tapestry to cover a bare wall. Bare walls make the room feel smaller and like you are in a jail cell. Covering up blank space is so important when trying to feel at home in your new college room. Tapestries are a fun, inexpensive, and non-permanent way to cover up an entire wall. You can even get one for every wall, if you’re so inclined. This saves the time and money that college kids need to save! Tapestries also look great with a string of lights hung over them. If you are interested in the bold patterns, there are also options to get solid colored tapestries to fill the space.

Blank space is your enemy in dorm rooms—the goal is to not feel like it’s a dorm.

There are so many ways to spice up a dorm room that will set it apart from your childhood room, and transform the boring space into something more personal. Take advantage of the freedom that comes with decorating your own space.
