Robert Gensburg, who led landmark VT school funding case, has died

Nov 15, 2017 by

Robert Gensburg, an attorney who shouldered the lawsuit that shaped Vermont’s education tax system for the past two decades, has died.

The Lyndon resident was 78 years old, according to an obituary published in The Caledonian Record.

Gensburg was well known as the lead attorney in the landmark lawsuit that challenged the way Vermont schools were funded.

Gensburg worked without pay as he led a team of attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union who argued Vermont’s school funding system was inequitable for children in property-poor towns.

“He was a miraculous man to be able to put all that time in for other people,” said Carol Brigham, whose young daughter, Amanda Brigham of Whiting, was the lead plaintiff in the case.
