TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS — WHAT PERCENTAGE READY FOR COLLEGE?

Nov 13, 2011 by

Donna Garner – What percentages of our Texas high school graduates in 2009 were academically prepared for college in Math, Reading, and Writing when they presented themselves for college enrollment in the fall of 2010?

On 11.2.11, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THEC) released a report based upon Texas’ 2009- 2010 high school graduates (mostly ISD’s, but some charter schools with graduating classes were also included).  The THEC used students’ scores from the TAKS, SAT, ACT, THEA, COMPASS, ASSET, or ACCUPLACER.

Texas graduates (2009) who were not ready for college work: 26.8% in Math; 18.4% in Writing; and 19.1% in Reading.

With the implementation of the new English / Language Arts / Reading curriculum standards (TEKS) and the new STAAR tests during the spring of 2012, Texas should begin to see both the Writing and Reading scores improve dramatically in the coming years.

Key to the Chart:

Percentage Calculation: The percentage of students who met TSI is calculated by dividing the number who met the standard in one or all the TSI sections by the total number of students who enrolled in Texas Public Higher Education…

I selected the following ISD’s and charter schools at random.  The percentages below indicate those students who met the minimum college readiness standards:
