The Combination of Engineering and Tech is Producing Incredible Opportunities

The word “synergy” refers to the activity of two entities that–working together–yield richer results than their combined outcomes when working separately. Oxpeckers, for example, are small birds that feed on zebra ticks. The zebras are a host for food while the oxpeckers serve as a way to control pests. This is synergy at work. Franchising serves businesses synergistically as the umbrella company partners with owner-operators by providing resources and setting standards while the entrepreneurs put up the capital and invest in the business. Meanwhile, manufacturing is enjoying this phenomenon as engineering concepts and computer technology advance the quality of life.

How the Disciplines Differ

Computer Science looks at how data and commands get processed, stored and transmitted by means of computational instruments. Engineering is more broad: the practice of designing and constructing engines, machines and similar creations. While different, there remains a significant overlap. Computers are designed and built–according to the aims and needs of their users. Computer scientists systematize information–within the parameters of the devices available to them. Hardware and software must interact to serve the intentions of those who employ them. Nevertheless, as devices grow in sophistication, their usefulness expands in all kinds of engineering applications.

Examples of Engineering and Computer Technology

Today, homeowners can turn off lights, close garage doors and set security alarms, all from remote locations. This is accomplished through the tweaking of electrical systems and plumbing, for instance, making them compatible with–and responsive to–wi-fi networks and personal devices. Engineering re-configures the household infrastructure while computer science works out the effective commands and algorithms. The result is known as a meshed network.

Cooking from afar; making coffee before getting out of bed; watering plants by means of wireless link; and keeping an eye on the babysitter from a distance are all innovations gained from the marriage of engineering and computer technology. Yet one domestic advancement stands out above the rest.

Long-Distance Climate Control

The development of wi-fi thermostats has revolutionized home (and office) management. This mechanism works in tandem with the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system of a house or commercial building by means of specially engineered sensors. Computer scientists connect the thermostat to the internet via an internet protocol (IP) network. Homeowners or landlords can then send directives relative to temperature control, e.g. turning heat on or off, adjusting the time settings etc. As engineers build more responsive thermostats, and computer technology experts program them for greater functional capacity, property owners can look forward to saving energy…and reducing the bills that follow.

Such conservation is often more important in industrial settings, where inputs like power consumption have a direct effect on the bottom line. More importantly, manufacturers and warehouse companies bear the responsibility of maintaining optimal temperatures for sensitive materials and products. Industrial temperature control continues to evolve as an important commercial field. Yet the engineers, computer technicians, investors and users of these systems continue to propel them forward as the needs are more sharply identified.
