In a previous article, we took a closer look at the spending habits of millennials. Those born in the 80s and 90s are pushing ahead in their careers and earning more than ever, so it was interesting to see how they spend the money they earn.

It is also worth noting that after that article, we discovered that more millennials are going back to school and pursuing higher degrees. More importantly, over 60% of millennials pursuing a higher degree chose to do so online.

When you consider the fact that younger students now immediately go for online courses as they graduate from high school, this preference becomes interesting. Why are more millennials going for online courses? What are the advantages that draw them to some of the best online programs in the country?

More Accessible Than Ever

Online degrees are more popular than ever. Top universities are making various programs available. I’m not talking about small universities and uninteresting majors either; top names and ivy league schools are now offering online degrees and various programs in different fields.

Do a search for nurse practitioner online programs and you will see schools like Carson-Newman and the courses they offer. These courses are available to students from around the world, and the accessibility of online courses means more people can return to school and pursue a higher degree in various fields.

Study from Everywhere

Since all course activities are conducted online, there is no need to commute or even relocate closer to the university just to be able to pursue a higher degree. In fact, most millennials are pursuing their master’s degrees while working a fulltime job and spending time with their families.

Online degrees allow students to study from everywhere, as long as they have a working internet connection and a standard web browser. The online learning platform used by schools gives access to course materials and other resources that students need to study.

There are even online forums, classes done through video streaming, and discussion sessions designed to help students master the course materials. In some cases – like the family nurse practitioner online programs we mentioned earlier – the schools will find a clinical site placement near the students.

Time Flexibility

Another big advantage that makes online degrees so interesting to millennials is the time flexibility they offer. There is no need to spend hours in class when pursuing a degree. In fact, there are no schedules to follow other than scheduled exams.

Students have complete freedom to decide when they want to study. It is entirely possible to study during lunch breaks at work, or in the evening once the children are in bed. Students can choose to allocate weekends and afternoons depending on their daily schedules.

This time flexibility makes online courses invaluable. If you are a fulltime mom, or a professional with a busy schedule, being able to study at night or during breaks is a huge plus. It allows you to pursue the degree of your dreams without sacrificing other responsibilities.

Up to 40% More Affordable

In the previous article about millennials’ spending habits, we discovered that one of the largest costs for millennials is repaying their student loans. Education is incredibly expensive, which is why so many millennials are now dealing with student loans that are difficult to repay.

Online degrees, on the other hand, are nowhere near as expensive as the equivalent offline programs. In fact, recent studies suggested that online degrees are up to 40% more affordable than their offline counterparts.

There is a simple reason behind this fact too; you see, online degrees have lower overhead costs. Universities don’t have to spend money maintaining classes or dealing with other overheads. Classes and exams are conducted online, so the cost of running online programs is substantially lower. This results in lower tuition fees for students.

Specific Programs to Choose From

What’s interesting about online degrees is how specific students can be with their majors. A master’s degree in business administration (MBA) is only one of the many business degrees you can pursue. You can specialize in digital marketing, manufacture, and other specific fields. The specification you take will also make you more valuable in that particular field.

The same can be said for a Master of Science in nursing. The MSc degree doesn’t need to be in nursing or healthcare administration, since you can now opt for a more specific program like the family nurse practitioner course.

These specific programs are in line with the needs of their respective industries. An MBA in digital marketing is as valuable as it can get today, mainly because every company is trying to be better at running digital marketing campaigns. They are hiring skilled managers and leaders for strategic roles, leaving plenty of opportunities for millennials to advance.

High Return on Investment

When you pair the lower tuition and other fees with the wealth of job opportunities on the market, it is easy to see how an online degree is the perfect investment to make today; this, in the end, is why more millennials are returning to school and pursuing online degrees. Online degrees provide high return on investment (ROI) in the form of a career boost.

Even corporations now value online degrees more. Online programs are seen as being more up-to-date and in tune with the needs of the market. There are new courses being introduced every year and more students pursuing their masters in specific fields. Thanks to technology, the overall learning experience is better too, so students can acquire new skills in a more effective way.

These reasons add up. Today, thousands of millennials invest in their future by enrolling in an online program of their choice. With universities like Carson-Newman making their online courses more accessible, that number will only grow.

You too can decide to go back to school and pursue a higher degree. All you need is the right online course to take and the motivation to get started. You’ll be surprised by how easy it is to earn a degree from the comfort of your home or office.
