CLEVELAND, Ohio — About 16,000 high school seniors across the United States on Wednesday were named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Competition.

About 15,000 of the students will become finalists. They will compete for 7,500 scholarships worth $33 million, to be awarded in the spring.

Finalists are chosen from 1.6 million students in more than 22,000 high schools, who took the PSAT.

The nationwide pool of semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors. The number is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
