5 Reasons To Consider A Career In Social Work

Sep 11, 2018 by

Social work is a career unlike many others. Instead of working to make money for a huge corporation that cares very little about you, you spend your days getting people out of bad situations, putting them on a better path, and improving the world around you. It doesn’t offer the most recognition or the best pay and can be incredibly difficult at times, but anyone in the field can tell you just how rewarding it truly is. Whether you’re just leaving school or are looking for a career change, here are four reasons to consider a social worker role.

1. Social Work Isn’t A Desk Job

Despite what many people believe, social work is not a desk job. In fact, at any moment throughout the day, you could get a phone call that means you have to drop all of your paperwork and try to resolve a crisis. To be effective and successful in social work, you have to engage with the community and visit homes, hospitals, schools, and more. With all of this, you’ll spend very little time at your desk, and when you do get a chance to sit down, you’ll be grateful for the break.

2. Social Work Is Quick To Pursue

After taking your four-year undergraduate degree, it can take as little as two years to obtain your social work master’s. You can even take your bsw online, which means that you can continue other work in the meantime. In total, this adds up to only six years worth of education, which is one of the quickest routes to a career in the public service and social justice sector. With so little time required to become a social worker, there’s no real reason why you couldn’t.

3. Social Work Makes A Real Difference

Most jobs are just about making money, but social work is completely different. Through the tools and resources you can offer as a social worker, you are able to make a real difference in the lives of those around you. You might not get the best pay out there or a thank you card every other day, but just knowing that you’ve had a positive impact on someone’s life, no matter how big or small, will make all of the work and hardships you’ve had to face worth it.

4. Social Work Will Always Be Necessary

Whether we like it or not, there are always going to be people in need of help, which means that there is always going to be a need for social workers who can help them. This demand provides long-lasting job security, which can give you peace of mind. This needs also means that social work licenses and degrees can be transferred from state to state, which isn’t the case for many other qualifications. This means you’ll be free to move and work wherever you please.

Choosing to pursue a career in social work is not a decision that should be taken lightly. However, if you have thought things through and have a passion for social justice, then it could be the best thing for you.
