Feb 26, 2019 by

Being a leader in any organization is not easy, there are always challenges. What can you do to be an effective leader, and better lead your organization? Everyone has their owns ideas on what makes a leader great, but there are some key things that leaders need to focus on to become better. Being a good leader is a skill that takes years to work at but cannot really be mastered. You have to make the time to be the best leader you can while keeping an open mind about what you can change and improve upon to become an even better leader.

1. Listen and Communicate

Communication is one of the most important parts of being a leader. You need to take the time to sit down with your team and talk to them. But you also need to listen to their responses. If they express concerns about something going on in your organization, listen. Look into the problem, and once you have, talk to them about it, to show that you not only listened but followed up on what they were saying.

Show your followers that you care about them, something as simple as asking someone how their sick loved one is feeling can show your followers that you care, you took the time to remember what was going on in their life.

Keeping these lines of communication open at all times can make a big impact on your success as a leader and your organization’s success. At the same time, make sure you do not appear to be playing favorites, and do not develop a close personal relationship with someone on your team, that can lead to problems down the road.

2. Know Your Limits

Everyone has their limits, and as a leader, it is important to know what they are. Determine what your boundaries are and stick with them. Knowing your boundaries can help save time and avoid frustration because if your boundaries are clear, it helps avoid confusion.

Another part of knowing your limits is to stay emotionally aware. Many people will suggest you keep your emotions separate from your business but working with people in the long term means you need to build relationships with them, which requires emotions. Staying emotionally intelligent when working with your team is an important and difficult thing to master; just remember, you may use your head for the big decisions, but use your heart for working with others.

Knowing your limits also means that you can find people who have strengths you do not. Building a team who have diverse skills is easier when you know your own strengths and weaknesses. Having someone who is strong where you are weak also means you can spend more time working in your stronger areas. Remember that just because you are the leader does not mean you have to do everything yourself. Being a good leader means asking for help and delegating when needed.

3. Own and Learn from Your Mistakes

Everyone makes mistakes. No one is perfect. This is something you need to remember when you make mistakes. When you make a mistake, own it and learn from it. This will show your followers that it is okay to make mistakes themselves and that they do not need to try to hide them or beat themselves up about them. You lead by example, no matter what, and this is definitely an example you should strive to set. Mistakes can be learning tools, so use them as such and encourage your team to view them in the same way. Seeing a mistake as a tool instead of a negative thing can make a big difference in the way you lead.

An important part of learning from your mistakes is also knowing when to acknowledge your strategy is not working and it is time to try a new approach. Stubbornly clinging to a strategy that is not working will not help you succeed. Try something new; ask your team for ideas. You will also sometimes have to be willing to cut your losses on a project, if it has become nothing but a waste of time or money, you need to let go. Accepting that something is not working and cutting your losses is important to being a good leader.

4. Reward and Recognize Your Followers

It is important to foster creativity within your organization, and it is important to recognize and reward that creativity. Try offering some new challenges to your followers, along with giving them the support they need to meet these goals. Knowing your team can help with that because if you know your team you can better determine what they will need to meet these goals.

If they succeed at meeting their goals, reward them in some way, and give them recognition. Show your team that you appreciate their hard work to make something happen, this will help them work hard in the future.

If they meet roadblocks and are unable to meet the goals you provide them with, talk to them. Find out what happened and see if there is anything you can do to help them meet their goal; if there is not, do not make them feel like they failed, recognize that they tried.

5. Do Not Sacrifice Your Personal Life

One huge mistake people in leadership positions can make is making their job their life. While you need to give your position your all, when you clock out for the day, you need to make time for the people and things you love. Taking days off to spend with your family and friends, without thinking about work, is needed to let you decompress. Days off refresh your mind, which will allow you to come back energized and ready to continue making your team succeed.

There are a lot of different qualities that go into being a successful leader. While it is hard, with work you can become a strong leader with a successful team. You just need to be willing to work on your weaknesses and listen to constructive criticism with an open mind.
