An Interview with Alyson Burston:  The Artifice

Michael F. Shaughnessy –

1) First of all, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself, and your education and experience?

I studied English for five lovely years in a city North of England. Since  my studies, I have manly focused on creative writing and published a  variety of work, including two well received novels.

2) Now, when did The Artifice begin, and how did it get it’s name?

The Artifice started sometime in 2012 and I joined the fun in 2014. I believe it was named after some riddle, although this is something I need to confirm. Maybe that is the “Artifice” of it.

 3) What kinds of submissions are you looking for ?

Writing about Movies, TV, Anime, Arts, Comics, Games, Literature or other art forms.

The Artifice is an online magazine that covers a wide spectrum of art forms. We do not run The Artifice, you do. The Artifice is collaboratively built and maintained by your fellow writers. It is structured to let you focus on the quality of the content while it deals with the exposure of it to an audience of millions.

Instead of recycling the same entertainment news stories or publishing commonplace editorials, The Artifice focus on unique topics that are intellectually stimulating and meaningful.

Our current writers range from undergraduates, to graduates, to emeritus professors and a bit of everyone in between.

4) With a lot of journals and periodicals nowadays, there is a page charge

or processing fee. Is there one with The Artifice?

Everything is completely free of charge.

5) Do you have a web page or home page?

6) Are there other outlets for high school and college students to submit their creative writing?

As far as I know, The Artifice is the only (free) platform that offers a collaborative editorial process. Nothing is published until we together spot errors and perfect the writing.

Thank you for your time and please do contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
