An Interview with Colin Flaherty: Who is Bleeding and Why isn’t the Media Reporting it?

Michael F. Shaughnessy –

1) Colin, for those who are unfamiliar with your work, could you briefly describe what you do?

I wrote a book about the epidemic of black mob violence and how the press misreports it.

The title of my book says it all: White Girl Bleed a Lot: The return of racial violence and how the media ignore it.  I wrote the book because I noticed an enormous difference between what newspapers and TV say about racial violence, and how it actually exists in places like YouTube. Lots of examples of that.

So, the book is about racial violence. And how few know about it.

2) Is there intentional bias in terms of what is reported, or are certain crimes minimized, while others are maximized?

In my book, I do not speak to intention, causes or solutions. Just what is.  I documented hundreds of examples of racial violence with links. And showed the difference between what was reported — and what actually happened. Intentional? Absolutely. The big papers are very explicit they do not believe race has anything to do with racial violence.

3) Today is 9/11 ( as I type this )  and I pause to remember all those we lost and who were impacted on 9/11. BUT, are there other deaths that do not get recognized nationwide, and are ignored?

Sure, lots of them. Here’s a story about one from my friend John Bennett: Articles: The Knockout Game: Racial Violence and the Conspicuous Silence of the Media

These people are not heroes. They are victims.  Thomas Sowell said until he read my book, he did not realize how widespread the problem was.

4) Now, let’s talk small town violence- some person in some small town in assaulted, left for dead, but there seems to be little radio, t.v. newspaper coverage- am I off on this?

My book is about black mob violence.  And there is a lot of it in big cities where you might expect it: Chicago, Baltimore, New York, etc. But also in smaller towns, like Peoria, Illinois. Or the Iowa State Fair.  How about Greensboro, North Carolina? On July 4 of this year, 1000 black people rampaged through the streets of Greensboro, beating people up, destroying property, threatening police.  When I looked into it, I found that racial mob violence is a regular feature of life in Greensboro. Ever hear about it? Well, then there you have it.

5) Do the media outlets focus on OUTRAGEOUS kinds of things and neglect rape, violence, and assault?

It is what it is. My observation is not that race should be a part of every story. But that when race is an organizing principle for a series of cases of mob lawlessness, then that should be reported.

6) I know there is violence in big cities. HOW much coverage should an assault get?

Should the New York Times cover every assault?  No.

If 500-1000 black people maraud through the streets of Flint, Michigan — fighting, destroying property, attacking police — and it happens with frequency, is that a national story?

You tell me. I vote yes. And it is happening all the time. In Flint, it was barely a local story.

Erie, Pennsylvania: Same story. Different city. Same coverage. Multiply that by 75 cities and hundreds of incidents, and that is my book.

7) Now, racial issues—does the media, IN YOUR OPINION, seem to report more white on white, or black on black or male on female or is there ANY pattern that you see?

Again: You tell me: A couple of white guys with a pickup truck in Idaho call a black person a name and get into a fight. National News.

Hundreds of black people attack patrons of an outdoor movie festival in Atlanta and no one is the wiser.

8) Now, tell us about your book and your work. What are you trying to accomplish?

The goal of the book is to simply say one thing: THIS IS HAPPENING.  White Girl Bleed a Lot really raises more questions than it answers.  So if I were trying to accomplish anything, it would be this: Maybe someone can pay attention to how black people are getting the message that mob violence is OK.

9) What have I neglected to ask? Do you have a web site?

Web site:

Here’s a question: What are people doing to defend themselves?

More and more people are using guns to fend off racial mob violence. I documented several in the book.
