  1. Please first of all tell us a bit about yourself, your education, and experience with cancer.

My background is in chemistry. I am a graduate of MIT. At age 48, with my death a medical certainty, I used my own knowledge of biochemistry to save my life and restore my health. This event started me on an odyssey of learning and teaching about health. Today, at age 75, I am in superior health and my body functions more like someone in the mid-twenties than someone in their mid-seventies. I have boundless energy, no aches or pains, and in the past 26 years, I have had only one cold. I take no prescription drugs.

I have helped many people, even those with stage four, terminal cancer to cure themselves and go on to lead healthy, productive lives. This includes my own brother who was diagnosed with metastasized, inoperable prostate cancer at age 60 and given only months to live. By taking my advice, he put his cancer into remission and went on to live another 20 years of high-quality life.

My books Never Be Sick Again, Never Be Fat Again, and Never Fear Cancer Again have been translated into multiple languages and are changing the way people around the world think about health and disease.

  1. Let’s talk about some variables that are generally accepted as being contributing factors to cancer- smoking, for example.

We have to be careful to differentiate between those things which contribute to cancer, which are numerous, and what actually causes cancer. Does smoking contribute to cancer? Yes it does. Smoking puts stress on the body, and therefore, contributes to every disease, not just cancer. People who smoke even get more colds. Smoking is a very bad idea.

However, to say that smoking causes cancer is pure nonsense, not supported by either the data or commonsense. The American Cancer Society will be happy to tell you that 87 of all lung cancer is caused by smoking. What they fail to tell you is that only 15 percent of heavy smokers ever develop lung cancer. Hardly a significant cause! Perhaps if the numbers were reversed and 85 percent of heavy smokers got lung cancer, you might be on to something. Japanese men smoke more heavily than American men, and yet they get less cancer.

3) Now can you discuss the LACK of certain vitamins, proteins and minerals that might contribute to cancer?

There are only two causes of all disease—deficiency and toxicity. Cells that are not getting everything they need to function normally or are getting things that interfere with their normal function will malfunction. Disease is the result of cellular malfunction—cancer included. This is why cancer is simple to cure. If you properly address the problems of deficiency and toxicity and restore the malfunctioning cells to normal, the cancer will simply disappear.

4) I recently read about Vitamin D- and the lack of sunshine and vitamin D as possibly contributing to cancer- could you comment?

Vitamin D plays a critical role in preventing cancer. People who live in the northern latitudes get less sunlight, and they get more cancer. In fact, northerners get more of all kinds of vitamin D deficiency diseases. More than 40 percent of the U.S. population is deficient in vitamin D, and that goes up to about 60 percent by the end of the winter.

Vitamin D acts like a hormone and interacts with genes, giving them crucial instructions that prevent cancer. Without sufficient vitamin D, the risk of cancer skyrockets. Research indicates that people with the lowest blood levels of vitamin D are four times more likely to die of colon cancer. A 2008 study in Carcinogenesis found that women with breast cancer were three times more likely to have low vitamin D levels. In fact, I have yet to see a new cancer patient who was not vitamin D deficient.

5) Ongoing stress- not enough sleep- how do these factors enter into the equation?

Stress is a major cause of virtually every disease, including cancer. In response to stress, your body releases a flood of hormones into your blood. Hormones are part of your body’s communications system. They deliver messages to genes and cells and act as genetic switches, turning genes on or off. They directly influence important cellular processes, including those that regulate cell growth and help to protect against tumors. Stress causes the release of growth-promoting hormones that help to switch cancer on. Patrick Quillin, in his book Beating Cancer with Nutrition, said, “In my years of experience, about 90% of the cancer patients I deal with have encountered a major traumatic event 1-2 years prior to the onset of cancer.” Recent studies indicate that the mind and the immune system are so intertwined that negative thinking depresses the activity of immune system cells, natural killer cells, and T and B lymphocytes.

Norepinephrine, a hormone produced during periods of stress, drives cancer. Norepinephrine increases the growth rate of cancer by stimulating tumor cells to produce two collagen-dissolving enzymes that break down the tissue around the tumor cells, allowing the cells to more easily move into your bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, these cells travel to other organs and tissues and form additional tumors. Norepinephrine can also stimulate tumor cells to release a chemical called vascular endothelial growth factor, which promotes angiogenesis (the growth of the blood vessels that feed growing tumors). The stress hormone epinephrine has been found to cause changes in prostate and breast cancer cells in ways that may make them resistant to apoptosis (normal programmed cell death). Promoting angiogenesis and inhibiting apoptosis is a prescription for cancer growth.

Cortisol is another stress hormone. A study in a 2000 Journal of the National Cancer Institute measured survival in metastatic breast cancer patients and found that, up to seven years later, their daily cortisol levels were predictive of who would or would not survive. Both cortisol and norepinephrine block the action of cancer-protective natural killer cells. A study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that women with breast cancer who had positive attitudes had much more active natural killer cells than those who had sunk into depression and hopelessness.

Adrenaline is another hormone that we produce more of when we are stressed. Adrenaline depresses immunity by decreasing available antibodies and reducing both the number and activity of lymphocytes. The membranes surrounding the cells of our immune system contain receptors for various neurochemicals produced in the brain, so the brain is directly communicating with immune cells. When we are happy, the brain produces a type of neurochemical that causes the immune system to strengthen and build. When we are depressed, the brain produces another type of neurochemical that effectively shuts the immune system, our first line of defense against cancer, down.

A 2010 study in Cancer Research found a 30-fold increase in cancer-spread throughout the bodies of stressed mice compared to those that were not stressed. According to researcher Erica Sloan, “What we showed for the first time is that chronic stress causes cancer cells to escape from the primary tumor and colonize distant organs.”

As for sleep, sleep regulates hormone balance. Hormone balance is essential to health. Studies indicate that lack of sleep increases the production of stress hormones. Stress hormones both cause and drive cancer. Cortisol is one of the hormones affected. Cortisol helps to regulate the release of natural killer cells that help the body battle cancer. Cortisol needs to be properly balanced. People who wake up frequently during the night are more likely to have abnormal cortisol rhythms that throw the body out of balance. Night shift workers have a shifted cortisol balance.

6) Let’s talk about pathways–the genetic pathway for example-my mother had cancer but she was a smoker. Can you give me odds or probability or will I avoid cancer through good nutrition and exercise?

We often worry far more than we need to about genetic inheritance. Are there genes that make you more susceptible to cancer? Yes. Will these genes cause cancer? No. They make the cancer process possible, but they don’t cause it. To cause cancer, you have to do something to activate those cancer-promoting genes. They wait for you to tell them what to do. Unactivated, they sit there and do nothing.

Most important to whether or not you get cancer is the environment you create for your genes based on what you eat and how you live your life. You cannot control your heredity, but you do have control over the environment you create in your cells. The environment is a trigger that causes genes to express in different ways, You are creating that environment every moment of every day. You are changing how your genes express with the foods you eat, the air you breathe, the water you drink, the toxins you expose yourself to, and the thoughts you think. You are in control of your health destiny.

If you give your cells what they need through good nutrition and supplementation, reduce the amount of toxins you are putting into your body, and get a reasonable amount of sleep and exercise, your risk of developing cancer will be close to zero. Contrast that to the general population that is consuming a cancer-causing diet, immersing themselves in a sea of toxins and living a cancer-causing lifestyle with too little exercise and too little sleep, and your risk of developing cancer in your lifetime approaches 50 percent.

7) I want to talk about exercise which , I guess in my opinion, brings oxygen to the cells- or am I off on this and how important is?

You are right. Exercise helps to bring oxygen to cells and this is critical to helping prevent cancer, since cancer is an oxygen deficiency disease. However, it goes way beyond oxygen. To be healthy, there are three things you have to do:

  1. Give your cells all the nutrients they need.
  2. Keep cells free of toxins that can interfere with their metabolic machinery.
  3. Move and stretch the cells.

Moving and stretching the cells facilitates the delivery of all nutrients to the cell, not only oxygen. It also facilitates the removal of metabolic waste products (toxins) from the cells. Exercise helps to prevent deficiency and toxicity, and therefore, help to prevent disease.

8) I think everyone has heard about some five or six year old child who contracts cancer. Obviously they have not been exposed to toxins, and have not been a 4 pack a day smoker all their lives. Is this just a strange, odd, bizarre, idiosyncratic form of cancer?Or genetic?

Thinking children have not been exposed to toxins is incorrect. Today, children are being exposed to hundreds of toxins in the womb because of the stored toxins in the mother’s tissues. They are being born toxic, and their genes are already malfunctioning at birth due to this toxic exposure. Then we make matters worse by giving them a series of extremely damaging vaccinations that depress immunity (strong immunity is critical to defending against cancer). We add to their toxic load with cancer-causing chemicals. Vaccines contain mercury compounds, aluminum, and formaldehyde that are known to cause cancer. Vaccines also contain viruses, and certain viruses have been associated with cancer. For example, we know that a monkey virus, SV40 found in polio vaccine, has been proven to cause cancer and to be responsible for an outbreak of lung, brain, bone and lymphatic cancers in those who received polio vaccine decades ago.

In addition to being dangerous, no vaccine has ever been proven in double-blind, placebo-controlled studies to be effective; the existing evidence indicates they are not effective. Given they are dangerous and of unproven effectiveness, it is unconscionable that by the time a child starts kindergarten he or she will have received 48 doses of 14 vaccines.

Then there is what we feed the children. Both mother’s milk and commercial milk is loaded with cancer-causing chemicals. As they get older, we feed them cancer-causing sugar and cancer-causing fats and oils.

After accidents, cancer is now the leading cause of death for children. The real surprise is that not more of the children have cancer, given what we do to them. They are the sickest children in American history and are the first generation in over 200 years that is expected to not live longer than their parents. It’s tragic.

9) I have read and enjoyed Bernie Siegel’s books on Love Medicine, and Miracles and the rest. How important is the “will to live ” in these instances?

The will to live is your single most important medicine. A change in thought can change your body. Genes are obedient servants. The same gene can express in thousands of different ways, depending on what you ask it to do. When you change your thoughts, you change the instructions given to your genes, which changes how your genes express.

The power of the mind to heal or make you sick is almost limitless. Your nervous system controls all the other systems in your body. It is the master computer that checks and balances your entire health. Every thought and emotion triggers the release of chemical messengers throughout the body. In other words, there is no such thing as “just a thought.” Every thought has a physical consequence, for better or for worse. That’s powerful! And so is the will to live.

10) Okay, diet coke, diet pepsi, and all these articificial sweeteners in pink and yellow packets found in every restaurant. How dangerous?

Toxicity is one of the two causes of all disease. So to be healthy, you must avoid toxins. Artificial sweeteners are toxic. Aspartame, used in most diet sodas, is known to be particularly toxic. One of the breakdown products of this molecule is formaldehyde. Formaldehyde accumulates in our cells where it damages DNA and causes cancer. Drinking even one can of diet soda can cause DNA damage that leads to cancer. Your risk increases with each can consumed. Aspartame is an excitotoxin. It can penetrate the blood brain barrier and damage the brain and nervous system. Aspartame also increases your risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Splenda does not penetrate the brain as aspartame does, but it can adversely affect the body in several ways because it is an unnatural, manmade chemical. The side effects of Splenda include skin rashes/flushing, panic-like agitation, dizziness and numbness, diarrhea, swelling, muscle aches, headaches, bladder issues, and severe gastrointestinal problems. Animal studies show that Splenda reduces the amount of good bacteria in the intestines by 50 percent, increases the pH level in the intestines, and contributes to increases in body weight. None of that is good for your health. Avoid artificial sweeteners.

11) I like a good cup of coffee, with creme and sugar if you please. Am I at risk?

We all make thousands of personal choices every day. For example, I know that sugar is a deadly metabolic poison. So do I eat sugar? Yes I do, at special events and holidays. I eat sugar three or four times a year, not three or four times a day as most people do. Coffee contains carcinogenic chemicals that result from the roasting process. Sugar promotes cancer, and the crème contains a cocktail of cancer-promoting chemicals along with cancer-promoting hormones. None of this is good, but it’s your body and you have to make judgment calls on how to treat it. In today’s society, very few can eat a perfect diet, but the closer you get to perfect, the better off you are.

12) Red meat- give us the low down.

Red meat is not the whole story. Animal protein is the story. The largest and most comprehensive nutrition study done to date was conducted by world renowned nutrition researcher, Dr. Colin Campbell who wrote The China Study.

Dr. Campbell concluded from his study that excess animal protein is one of the most powerful disease promoters ever discovered. Campbell found that the most powerful cancer driver of all was milk protein. Animal protein, beyond what is needed for growth and daily repairs, is able to turn cancer on in experimental animals 100 percent of the time. You can switch cancer on by feeding animal protein to the test animals, and switch it off when you stop.

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for total protein is 50 to 60 grams per day. Many Americans get twice this amount. Our average consumption of animal protein alone is about 70 grams per day. Americans average more animal protein than the RDA for total protein. By contrast, most rural Chinese, who are far healthier than we are, average one-tenth of that, 7 grams of animal protein per day (about the amount contained in one egg). Excess animal protein promotes cancer, obesity, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and kidney, eye, brain, and autoimmune diseases. A high animal protein diet changes the ratio of estrogens in the body, shifting the balance to those that stimulate cancer. People who are on high-protein diets to lose weight need to be aware of this danger. Animal protein is also rich in a fat called arachidonic acid, and studies have linked arachidonic acid to promoting tumor growth and metastasis. Averaging 7 grams or less per day of animal protein is a worthy goal. This amounts to approximately one egg or a piece of fish or meat the size of the palm of your hand. The remainder of the RDA should be plant protein.

13) Could you provide the titles of your books, and where they can be found and what you are researching now?

These are my book titles:

Never Be Sick Again

Never Be Fat Again

Never Fear Cancer Again

These books can be found in bookstores like Barnes and Noble, at Amazon.com and on my website www.beyondhealth.com.

At Beyond Health, you can obtain autographed books, and these make excellent gifts.

Right now, I am working on three new books. The first to appear will be Never Feel Old Again. Aging is a natural process, but in our society, it is a disease process. We accelerate aging with our poor diets, toxic exposures and inappropriate lifestyles. This kind of aging is a mistake! But it’s a mistake we don’t have to make. Never Feel Old Again will teach people how to slow and even reverse the aging process. There is a difference between chronological age and biological age. I am 75 years-old, but I have the arteries of a 25 year-old. Anyone can do this because the body is a self-repairing system. Unfortunately, most people are going in the opposite direction. Today we are measuring 30 year-olds with the biological markers of 80 year-olds. A couple of years ago, we measured a group of overweight 10 year-olds with the biological markers of 45 year-olds. If you are 45 when you are 10, what will you be at age 50? Dead perhaps?

14) What have I neglected to ask?

What should we all do? We are in the midst of the largest epidemic of chronic, degenerative disease in the history of the world. This epidemic of cancer, heart disease, diabetes Alzheimer’s, arthritis, asthma, depression and other chronic diseases are lowering our quality of life, causing our loved ones to die prematurely and threatening to bankrupt our governments and businesses. It doesn’t have to be this way!

The knowledge we already have is sufficient to end this epidemic. We don’t have to spend another dime on research to accomplish this. What we already know will do the job if only we teach it to people and have them put it to work in their lives. I have seen miracle after miracle happen when people apply what we already know, including the miracle in my own life where I brought myself back from death’s door to living in superior health.

Knowledge is the key to ending this epidemic. I strongly recommend that people read my books. What you need to know to end disease in your life is contained in the books.
