  1. RV, you have just written a great book called ” Step up to The Plate Dad !” but before we get to the book- a little background-please- where were you born, and when, and what does R.V. stand for?

I was born in Columbia, South Carolina, but was raised in Cayce South Carolina to Willie Fish and Mary Brown on July 6, 1953. R V  stands for absolutely nothing.  Jeremiah 1:5

  1. Your early childhood and youth- what were some formative factors leading to your success?

Great parents, a lot of prayer, a lot of love from my 16 siblings, and a lot of discipline and fellowship. The wisdom of my dad telling me to stay in school because one day it will pay off. Luke 18:27

  1. College and sports- tell us about your accomplishments there-

At Airport High School I lettered in five sports (football, baseball, soccer, track and wrestling). I won a scholarship to South Carolina State University and majored in Special Education. I’m in my High School and College Hall of Fame, and FCA Hall of Fame, but more importantly I’m in God’s Hall of Fame. Luke 1:37   Phil. 4:6-7

  1. Now, O.T.A.Y.- Outreach to America’s Youth- when did this start, who started it and what is it’s present status-? And where can we find more information?

It started in August of 1988. I am the Founding President of Outreach To America’s Youth. It is a 501(c)3 which is a non-profit organization. The status now is that it is up and running. It’s stronger now than it has ever been. God has allowed me to go to 48 States and 47 Countries and also allowed me to speak in schools, churches, and prisons> You can find more information at, and youtube. Col. 2:6

  1. Much of your book is a challenge to fathers- to step up to the plate and to be a mentor, a coach, a caring disciplinarian, and a person devoted to their family- why are all these things important?

Because God put it in order first. God’s order is faith, family, and fellowship. God is the organizer of the family which is why it is so important. The lack of families is why we have the conditions of the young people and the community -the lack of family structure.  Prov. 22:6

  1. Now, perhaps most importantly, your book says that fathers must be- let’s say religious leaders, spiritual leaders, prayerful leaders in the family- in your mind, why is this important?

It builds a solid foundation in a young person’s heart and mind so as they mature they have a background of faith, family, and belief.  So when life gets hard,  they understand that prayer works (that’s what’s lacking – prayer and bible study),  which is what I grew up with. Eph. 6:4

  1. Bible study and religious education- why is it so important in your mind?

Not in my mind, but in my Spirit because we have to learn how to pray and rely on God. That comes from family background and nurturing of your parents,  which is what is missing today. Prayer is the key that opens the door of God’s heart.  Education is the key to success.   Prayer also keeps you humble. I Peter 5:6

  1. I do not need to say that at this time- our nation is rent asunder- and needs prayer.  Your ideas here?

Fear is the opposite of faith. Fear comes from satan. II Tim. 1:7 (No fear) with fear also comes doubt. When you have doubt you don’t have confidence. Confidence comes from God and believing in oneself,  which is why we need positive parents and influences in our homes and communities. Phil.1:6 (confidence)

9) Where can people learn more about your ideas? Do you have a website?    My website is

On my facebook page are all the Backyard Church sermons I have preached for the last 30 weeks.  You can also find me on Youtube.

  1. What have I neglected to ask ?

About my family. I’ve been married for 44 years. I have two children and five grandchildren . I’m a full-time evangelist and have been for the last 36 years. I have 9 brothers and 7 sisters. A power mother and father that my community held in high esteem, and they built my character.  Character does count,  which is something that is lacking today. Psalm 26:11-12
