Bill requires American history classes to graduate
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas college students would have to take six hours of comprehensive American or Texas history to earn their degrees under a bill scheduled for a hearing by a House panel.
Freshman Rep. Giovanni Capriglione, a Southlake Republican, filed his bill in March after a report critical of classes at the University of Texas and Texas A&M University.
Texas college students already take history in their core classes toward graduation. A recent report by the National Association of Scholars questioned whether classes that narrowly focus on American naval history or African-American history satisfy that requirement.
Capriglione’s bill is specific that students must take a class with a “comprehensive survey” of American or Texas history, but some lawmakers have questioned whether the Legislature should meddle with specific college curriculum.
