Billboards call for additional funding for Richmond schools

Apr 25, 2016 by

Supporters of Richmond Public Schools put up billboards around the city Sunday in support of increasing funding for the district, which is asking for an $18 million bump in operating funds over last year’s budget.

In addition to messages such as “Fully fund our schools,” the billboards encourage residents to join a march from Martin Luther King Middle School to City Hall planned ahead of tonight’s City Council meeting.

The council is set to resume its budget deliberations at noon, when members will continue to discuss their amendments to Mayor Dwight C. Jones’ proposed budget.

The council members have all submitted amendments that would increase allocations for the school district. The proposals range from about $5 million to the full $18 million the district requested.
