Book Review: Zacktastic-Twinsanity

Michael F. Shaughnessy –

The book Zacktastic, is, at first glance, just another one of those dime a dozen “tween” books that are vapid and insipid. I am happy to say that Zacktastic is fantastic!

Zack is 10 years old and has just learned that he is a genie- you know, like the kind that grants three wishes, and lives in some bottle or old metallic holding device like in one of those old television. shows of the 60’s. Anyway, Zack is just getting accustomed to his life and training as a genie ( yes, they have to go to school to learn the tricks of the trade so to speak) and his life gets a bit complicated when apparently his twin sister also becomes a genie, although somewhat later than Zack. Obviously things get hectic and there is a foe that has to be dealt with, but with friends that he has met at genie school, things work out in the end and a rescue takes place. I am not sure if all is well that ends well, since this is the second book in the series, so we may see a third- and in fact, we may wish for another.

Courtney Sheinmel is the author and kind of specializes in “tween “ books ( for kids who are not yet dealing with the ravages of adolescence, and are still practicing their reading skills ) and the book is marvelously illustrated – not sure by who—but I am sure it is published by Sleeping Bear Press. This would be a great Christmas gift for those kids in their “tween” years and is an engaging book that reads well, and has great dialog and some magical words along the way.
