City school district steps into dispute over whether to rename La Jolla Christmas Parade

LA JOLLA — Two top San Diego Unified School District officials have weighed into the debate over whether the La Jolla Annual Christmas Parade should be renamed to reflect the area’s religious diversity.

First reported by the La Jolla Light, Superintendent Cindy Marten on Sept. 4 told the La Jolla Community Planning Association she supported an effort to rename the event so that it is more inclusive and eliminates a direct reference to Christmas. Other local events have made similar changes, most notably in 2002 when “Christmas on the Prado” was renamed “December Nights.”

According to the Light, Marten made clear she was speaking to the panel as a citizen — not as the superintendent — but cautioned: “I will consider going to my board in the future and making recommendations for whether or not it’s appropriate for our schools to be participating in parades that have names that are not as inclusive as we might like.”
