Common Core is becoming a federal mandate

Sep 10, 2014 by

Conservatives decry Common Core as an attempted federal takeover of school curricula. Common Core didn’t originate with the feds. It began life as an initiative by the states. But the federal government does seem increasingly committed to making it a mandate, in essence verifying the conservative critique.

The Obama administration made adoption of Common Core a requirement to receive additional federal funds through its “Race to the Top” program. And it recently yanked Oklahoma’s No Child Left Behind waiver because it abandoned Common Core.

Most states have such a waiver. Without it, states are subject to a testing and accountability regimen from the George W. Bush education reform that few any longer think is productive. Lifting the waiver is pretty punitive.
