How the complicated process of finalizing PARCC results unfolds

It’s approaching 12:15 p.m. and David Knecht is in a hurry.

Knecht, an English teacher at Lenape Regional High School in Burlington County, nervously slips into an elevator in the Renaissance Denver Hotel, a towering triangular-shaped building on the outskirts of the city.

Today is Knecht’s third day at the Renaissance, in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, but he’s spent most of his time behind closed doors in the windowless conference room he’s heading to now. As the elevator door opens on the basement level of the hotel, Knecht emerges with a singular goal of getting back to the conference room in time.

“Are we late?” he calls out to a woman nearby.

Knecht soon disappears into one of several private conferences. Inside, discussions between educators will affect the test results for about 800,000 students in New Jersey and 5 million across the country.

Last week, the Renaissance was the headquarters for determining the significance of students’ scores on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exams, new state assessments that debuted in New Jersey and about ten other states this spring but currently reveal little about student achievement.

NJ Advance Media was a among small group of media outlets given an up-close look at the complicated process of assigning meaning to students’ scores on the tests, perhaps the most controversial in state history.
