Sep 24, 2019 by

Focus is one of the major challenges creative writers encounter. In fact, it is one of the biggest challenges for anyone who is creative and trying to channel that creativity into one direction and creating one comprehensible end piece of work. Fortunately, there are some tips that can help you get focused and more importantly, stay focused in your creative writing.

Following are the key factors that will help you stay focused in your creative writing:

Acknowledge Your Progress

As a creative writer writing projects, if you cannot see how you are progressing then continuing to write leads to losing focus and even its purpose. That’s why it is recommended that you acknowledge your progress by reviewing your work every month or so. Recall what you have written, how you developed, and experimented as a creative writer. You will be amazed how far you can come in a matter of weeks, without much effort.

Use External Feedback and Encouragement

Opinions and ideas from those you respect and trust can be great inspiration to you. It’s easy to lose objectivity by getting lost in the thick of a writing project. So, you should find people you respect and trust, and whose opinion you value. Ask them for their opinions on your latest work on regular basis, what they like, and what you can improve according to them.  You can also take creative writing class for this purpose. The external feedback and encouragement will help you stay focused, clear, and on track.

Have a Long-Term Vision and a Way Forward

To keep us motivated, we all need goals to move towards. So, you should have a long-term vision for how you want to be as a creative writer. It is recommended that you take the time to write out where you want to be in the near future as a writer. Write about what you would like to have accomplished in as much detail as possible. After that, break this down into smaller time periods e.g. a year, three months, one month. By doing this, you will have focused, clear goals to move towards. Furthermore, your motivation will also be higher as you can see the benefits of your development.

Write Regularly

There is no shortcut or substitute to becoming prolific, focused creative writer. The only way to achieve this is to write regularly and develop effective routines and habits that work for you. It is recommended that you set aside a specific amount of time every day to write and then commit to it. This is one of the primary things taught in the classes of creative writing for primary school.

Capture and Store Spare Ideas

The more you write, the more ideas will appear from nowhere, ideas you can easily get distracted by. It is recommended that you capture these spare ideas for your future projects as soon as they appear and hence avoid being side-tracked.

Use the above-mentioned tips in combination and you will have the basis for a very prolific and powerful creative writing career.
