With the aid of D.C. School and U.S. Education Department staff, Education Sec. Betsy DeVos eluded screaming protesters blocking the door of a D.C. public school where she was scheduled to meet with education advocates on Friday.

Staffers from the two organizations “jumped through hoops” to get DeVos inside safely, The Washington Teachers Union, the meeting’s organizer, reports:

NOW: We stayed around to catch @BetsyDeVos leaving @JATrojans. @usedgov & @dcpublicschools jumped through hoops to get her inside. @AFTunion

In reply to Tweets, the D.C. Police Department said that an investigation of potential assault charges against the protesters has been lauched.

After the meeting, DeVos issued a defiant statement, saying she won’t let protesters keep her from doing her job of improving the U.S. educational system:

“I will not be deterred in executing the vital mission of the Department of Education. No school door in America will be blocked from those seeking to help our nation’s school children.”
