Deposits at Sweet Briar fall short of goal, but school president still optimistic

May 12, 2016 by

Sweet Briar College received about 125 deposits from admitted students by May 1, according to President Phillip Stone.

That number falls shy of Stone’s previously stated goal of enrolling 200 to 250 new students by fall, but he said May 1 is not a hard-and-fast deadline for deposits and the school is going to continue to admit students this summer.

Getting 200 students for the fall is part of Stone’s long term plan to wean the college off reliance on massive donations — many of which come from the alumnae and allies who saved the school from closing in 2015 and forced the resignation of former leaders.

Stone said the end of June will bring a better sense of what next year’s incoming class may look like.

If deposits still sit at 125 in September, he said, it would be “a huge disappointment in where we need to be” but not a threat to making things work next year, given the level financial support the school is seeing from donors.
