DNC email leak: Don’t touch Common Core

By Jason Russell –

One of the emails released in the Democratic National Committee leak shows communications staff directing video producers not to mention the Common Core educational standards in a video depicting Republicans as anti-teacher.

“Common Core is a political third rail that we should not be touching at all,” Deputy Communications Director Eric Walker wrote. “Get rid of it.” The email was sent in May 2016.

As Joy Pullmann points out at The Federalist, the email explains why Common Core gets no explicit mention in the 2016 Democratic Party platform. The platform does say, however, that “Democrats believe all students should be taught to high academic standards.” Common Core supporters often use language akin to “high academic standards” to make their case.

A May and June 2015 poll conducted by Education Next found that Democrats were more likely than the general public to support Common Core, though less than 60 percent of Democrats said they support the education standards.

Walker goes on to admit that “most people want local control of education so having Cruz and Trump saying it on a DNC video is counterproductive. Would get rid of any references to that.”

For reference, the same Education Next poll found that 15 percent of the public wants educational standards set at the local level, 43 percent at the state level and 41 percent at the federal level. Democrats were more likely than the general public to support having standards set by the federal government. That question asked only about standards, though, not education control in general.

The poll also found that people were more likely to grade their local schools better than schools nationwide.

Here’s the full text of the Eric Walker DNC email, which also mentions Chris Christie:

Guys, this is a long-standing problem that I look forward to addressing at our meeting on Wednesday. There needs to be a better system because a number of times now, I have asked for specific things in a video, and what I get back is some reinterpretation that doesn’t work for the comms staff.

Common Core is a political third rail that we should not be touching at all. Get rid of it.

Most people want local control of education so having Cruz and Trump saying it on a DNC video is counterproductive. Would get rid of any references to that.

We wanted Christie in there bc he’s a trump surrogate / could be trump vp / most anti-teacher guy out there. He’s yelled at pretty much everyone, there HAS to be video of him yelling at teachers and looking like a bully

Need Cruz saying dept of fed should be abolished. If you can’t find it – use this<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQFrEknrumI> from AFP summit: “The department of Education – which should be abolished”

Thanks
