These Legislators may think they are gathering political support from various constituencies by being pawns in the hands of the education establishment; but I guarantee you that when it comes time for the next round of elections, these legislators’ “new found friends” will be nowhere around; and the moms and pops who feel helpless because their children’s public schools are saturated with the Type #2 social justice agenda will realize what a mess this 83rd Legislative Session has made.  – Donna Garner

Yesterday I wrote an article entitled “The Worst Legislative Session Ever on Education” in which I lamented the destruction by this 83rd Texas Legislative Session of our public schools (including charter schools which  are also public schools) — http://educationviews.org/the-worst-legislative-session-ever-on-education/

 

Perhaps I need to explain what is at stake one more time.

 

I have assertively dedicated the last 15 years of my life to put Texas public schools on the path to a New Plan.  This New Plan includes moving Texas public schools from Type #2 to Type #1 (chart posted further on down this page).  Just as this New Plan is moving into full implementation (10th graders on down this year), here comes the 83rd Legislative Session that is trying to destroy it.

 

The “red” people working in the background are using the “green” and “yellow” people as pawns to make sure that the number of low-information voters multiplies and elects  more Obamas in the years to come, thus changing America forever from the Great American Way.

 

The “green” people are those who go-along to get-along; they go with the status quo and are content to follow whatever teaching fad is in vogue at the present time. These people are not bad people but are easily deceived by those who have ulterior motives (e.g., drive-by media, national educator organizations, left-leaning politicians, CSCOPE, Common Core Standards).

 

The “yellow” people are those who are driven by greed, money, power, and fame. Many of these people are vendors, lobbyists, or school employees who look past the egregious content of their products so long as they themselves are benefitting.  Into this group fall some CSCOPE/TESCCC/ESC employees, Thomas Ratliff, Mike Moses, Pat Jacoby, TASA, TASB, etc.

 

The “red” people know exactly what they are doing. They have long-term goals to change America, and they realize that the best way to do this is to indoctrinate this and succeeding generations of school children in their classrooms.  Into this group fall such people as Obama, Arne Duncan, Linda Darling-Hammond, Bill Ayers, the National Education Organization, and many other left-leaners.

 

Politicians can come in all different colors – green, yellow, and red. Those who blindly follow are green. Those who seek fame, fortune, and/or control for themselves are yellow. Those whose aim is to change America from a capitalistic, free-market Republic into a Socialist, Communist, Marxist country are red.

 

 

Sen. Dan Patrick as chair of the Senate Education Committee and Rep. Jimmy Don Aycock as chair of the House Education Committee are responsible for doing irreparable harm to the New Plan which is presently in the process of full implementation for Texas students (10th on down).

 

Patrick and Aycock deny that they are dumbing down the Texas public schools, but what else could it be called?

 

The New Plan holds all teachers accountable to teach the new Type #1 curriculum standards (TEKS) by setting in motion a public accountability system that utilizes a number of indicators, one of which is the students’ scores from the new Type #1 STAAR/End-of-Course tests.

 

To remove these STAAR/EOC’s from each grade level/high-school core course (reducing their number from 15 to 5) means no more “pressure” upon teachers individually at each grade level/course to teach the new Type #1 TEKS and no more “pressure” upon students to learn them.

 

If the Legislature prevails, the result in the upcoming years is that the Type #1 TEKS will be ignored; and Type #2 will continue to saturate our public schools (including the charter schools).  It is Type #2 that is responsible for turning out our present high-school graduates, only 25% of whom are college or career ready.

 

Fact for Sen. Patrick and Rep. Aycock: This is called “dumbing down” our public school students.

 

The New Plan (sophomores on down) is to require all Texas high-school graduates to be exposed to four years of English/Science/Social Studies/Math.  As we speak, the Texas State Board of Education and the Texas Education Agency are adopting many new 4 x 4 core courses that will appeal to students with various life interests.

 

The New Plan will produce high-information graduates  – people who have the core knowledge to be able to think logically and analytically, people who can read and write well and who make informed decisions based upon the facts.

 

To lift these requirements (which are in place now for sophomores on down) would  be to continue to produce generations of low-information graduates.  Fact for Sen. Patrick and Rep. Aycock:  This is called “dumbing down” our public school students.

 

The Texas Legislature is in the midst of doing away with the Grades 4 and 7 TEKS Writing tests which would end up allowing students to get to Grade 9 before being tested on a high-stakes Writing test.  This is a sure recipe for failure and would produce worse writing skills in our public school students than they have right now.  Fact:  Sen. Patrick and Rep. Aycock: This is called “dumbing down” our public school students.

 

The Texas Legislature is also in the midst of dropping the requirement that all high-school students take World History and World Geography – a sure way to produce future graduates (and low-information voters) who have no clue what America’s place is in  world events.

 

If the Texas Legislature does away with the World History and World Geography STAAR/EOC’s, how will parents and the public ever know whether TASA iCLOUD, regular public schools, charter schools, CSCOPE, Turkish Gulen Harmony Charter Schools, dual-credit courses, Texas Virtual Academy, online learning, Advanced Placement courses, International Baccalaureate programs, Web 2.0 Tools, and Safari Montage are actually moving our school children into Type #1 or into Type #2?

 

Some of the most troubling lessons in CSCOPE (and in other curriculum materials) are those that cover World History and World Geography (e.g., students designing Communist/Marxist flags, Islamic fundamentalism, burqas, Christianity as a cult, The Middle East, Christopher Columbus as an eco-warrior, 9/11 terrorists as “freedom fighters,” portrayal of communism as superior to capitalism, etc.).

 

Sen. Patrick and Rep. Aycock: This is called “dumbing down” our public school students.

 

Right now the Texas Legislature is in the process of dropping most of the End-of-Course tests above Grade 9 which would take the individual responsibility off both teachers and students to pursue academic excellence in Grades 10 – 12.  It is that day-to-day “pressure” that keeps everyone working hard to reach a goal.  Sen. Patrick and Rep. Aycock:  This is called “dumbing down” our public school students.

 

Here is another fact which I know from having two sons, five grandchildren, and teaching school for 33+ years:  Students will rise to whatever level is expected of them.  They also will sink to whatever level is set for them.

 

If we release students (and teachers) from the responsibility of meeting the goals set at each grade level/each course by the Type #1 TEKS and STAAR/EOC’s, we will produce generations of “lazy” thinkers who will not have the survival skills needed and who will fall for every scam artist who comes along.  Actually, this is a description of many of the people who now proliferate our society.  The only way to redirect America is to change what this and future generations are taught.

 

As I have stated before, I would hate to be in these Texas Legislators’ shoes and leave behind the legacy from the 83rd Legislative Session as being the one that destroyed Texas’ economic future.
