As expected, Facebook’s revamped news feed is a bane for conservative media outlets and a boon for liberal ones. Breitbart, Fox, and Gateway Pundit were hit the hardest. As the Media Equalizer wrote a few days ago,  Facebook’s news algorithm suggests which brands of news to offer users, and which ones to cut. To nobody’s surprise, conservative news feeds were slashed while lefty outlets were either untouched or given a bump.

As The Outline wrote Monday:

According to The Outline’s analysis of Facebook engagement data obtained from research tool BuzzSumo, conservative and right-wing publishers (such as Breitbart, Fox News, and Gateway Pundit) were hit the hardest in the weeks following the announcement, with Facebook engagement totals for February dropping as much as 55 percent for some, while the engagement numbers of most predominantly liberal publishers remained unaffected.

Fox News

According to BuzzSumo, an organization that tracks the movers and shakers of news content:

Though Fox News posted about 10 percent less in February than in January, the publisher’s total Facebook engagement dropped by nearly 26 percent, or roughly seven million interactions. Compare this to CNN’s total engagement numbers, which only lowered by 2 percent, and The New York Times, which increased its engagement by about 3 percent, despite the fact that its overall post count was lower.

After the 2016 election Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said:

Of all the content on Facebook, more than 99% of what people see is authentic. Only a very small amount is fake news and hoaxes. The hoaxes that do exist are not limited to one partisan view, or even to politics. Overall, this makes it extremely unlikely hoaxes changed the outcome of this election in one direction or the other.

If that is true, why does the new algorithm target conservative sites?

YouTube is the next tech giant that will select your information preferences for you. The Outline reported that since the recent school shooting in Florida, “YouTube has banned a considerable number of the most egregious conspiracy peddlers–speaking of ‘conspiracy peddlers’ when is YouTube going to remove the thousands of videos reporting that 9/11 either didn’t happen, or was an “inside job”–and alt-righters from its ranks,”  and comes after months of scandals regarding the site’s neglecting so-called fake news published on its site. The backlash came to a head last month when a conspiracy theory video suggesting that Parkland massacre victim David Hogg was a crisis actor was listed in the top trending spot on YouTube.
