On the fence about Common Core: Brilliant new approach or another fad?

My grandson Ben, a first-grader, is the first member of our family to be taught under the Common Core State Standards, this decade’s leading educational hot potato. He is doing fine, but his father, my son Joe, has some issues.

Why, Joe asks, is his son no longer allowed to carry the 1 when he adds two numbers? Instead, he has to engage in “regrouping,” something unheard of when Joe was a first-grader in the 1970s.

Also, he asks, why does Ben have to explain how he got his answers in math? Joe concedes that one explanation per homework assignment might be acceptable, but four or five each night? It gets tedious.
