It doesn’t matter whether you’re a college student, or in your later years, learning to drive can be a great skill to pick up – giving you freedom, easing the daily commute, and making you more employable. If you’re thinking about getting behind the wheel for the first time, but are unsure, then here are four reasons to remind you why getting your license can be a good thing.

It doesn’t have to be expensive

If you’re thinking about booking some driving lessons and buying a car, you may be thinking – can I really afford this? It can be expensive, yes, if you don’t take time to find a competitive driving school and if you don’t set a budget to buy a vehicle. However, done properly and with some homework, you can make it affordable.

You also need to shop around for things like insurance, to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Check out all the options, including Metromile Insurance. You need to make sure you have all the correct paperwork in place to take to the highway, but it doesn’t have to mean you blow your budget!

The highway is yours

If you currently have a long, difficult commute to work or college, then learning to drive could change your life. Having a set of wheels to get you to and from home every day could revolutionize your daily routine. Of course, you should still try to use some public transport – or get some exercise – where possible, but having a car opens-up new options too.

Away from work or your studies, being able to drive means that you no longer have to rely on other people to drive you around. You will become your own boss and be able to travel wherever you want to – and when you want to.

Boosting your employability

Having your driving license can be a real asset when it comes to getting a job. If you’re not able to drive, then you could lose opportunities. Imagine if you want to make a career in sales. You would probably have to visit lots of clients every day, so a car would be a mandatory part of the role.

Similarly, if you want to run your own business, having your license would also be crucial. You will need to get around customers, attend conferences and events, as well performing general administration. Without the ability to drive, your abilities at work would be limited.

Vacations on wheels

Yes, having your driving license can help you with work and studies, give you more freedom, but it can also give you fresh vacation opportunities. Imagine all those places you’ll be able to visit if you have your own car. When you have time off, you can jump in with some friends or family and head off for a day out or a weekend away. You don’t have to go far, any time away from home can be just the tonic to get you relaxed.
