Sep 5, 2014 by

The Texas border was thrown into the spotlight this summer when thousands of undocumented and unaccompanied immigrant children began appearing at crossings and getting captured. With the huge influx of cases, border patrol facilities were stretched to their limits.

According to the Administration for Children and Families in the Office of Refugee Resettlement, 29,890 unaccompanied children were released to sponsors in counties around the country. Federal law mandates that apprehended children must be provided basic care until they’re released and go through the immigration process.

Texas leads the nation by far with the highest number of kids at 5,280. You can view a complete breakdown by county here.
