Heritage Hangout: Common Core Education Standards

The rubber is meeting the road with the Obama Administration’s Common Core education standards.

As the standards start to affect students in the classroom, even the American Federation of Teachers has said that teachers are not ready to implement the new program.

Michelle Malkin has been covering the Common Core education standards push in depth this year. Her coverage has brought many of the details of these national standards and government overreach to light.


Some Members of Congress have taken notice. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) wrote this week in National Review Online that “U.S. Department of Education has become so congested with federal mandates that it has become, in effect, a national school board.”

Alexander described the plan he supports to turn education around:

It rejects the federal mandates that effectively created a national school board, prohibiting the secretary of education from prescribing standards or accountability systems for states. It maintains the requirement that states have strong standards and high-quality tests, but doesn’t write them for the states.
