“Getting married in Vegas.”

“If I don’t use it, I will lose it.”

“My child has an extracurricular event.”

“I have to go to Indiana for a second interview.”

Those are some of the reasons Chicago Public Schools teachers offered for taking sick leave this year, according to a district audit of about 250 teachers’ requests. For the record, none of those is a valid reason to take a sick day.

CPS sent letters to those audited, reminding them that “scheduling sick days in advance is permitted to allow employees to plan medical events such as a doctor’s appointment or medical procedure; however, these days cannot be used for vacation or non-medical purposes.”

Result: About one-third of employees changed their request for a sick day to another claim — such as personal business day or excused absence without pay.
