How face mask protects you from COVID-19

Novel coronavirus has rapidly spread throughout the whole world. While some with coronavirus have a mild illness, others may experience pneumonia, difficulty breathing, high fever, fatigue, and even respiratory failure. Some researchers have found that wearing masks can prevent people from spreading the airway germs to other people. According to guidelines of health organizations, face masks with other preventive measures, such as social distancing and frequent hand-washing can help us slow the spread of the virus.

Protective face masks can play a great role in preventing the virus, but that role is limited. Wearing a mask blocks most of the larger droplets that come out of your nose and mouth. Covering your face is important because droplets carry the germs, and you can be infected and contagious without realizing it. As per the health ministry recommendations, a healthy individual in a normal situation does not need to wear a mask, but if you’re feeling ill or going outside then it’s necessary to wear a face mask to protect yourself and others from the spread of COVID-19.

A recent study says that the use of face masks including disposable face masks or surgical masks, N95 respirators, and face shields can protect people against infection and also led to a lower risk of infection. While covering your face in public has become the new trend as the COVID-19 keeps spreading across the world.

What happens when you don’t wear face masks when you go outside?

Just think if you are infected, which you might still not realize, and you’re going outside without wearing a face mask, through your droplets from your breath you could spread the virus to others. Possibly, you can also infect others, by touching your mouth to your hands and then to a shared surface or by touching another person’s hands.

Even if you are not coronavirus infected, going without wearing a mask may increase your chances of catching the virus from another infected person.

You might be infected, or somebody might infect you. After that, whoever got infected then carries the germs of the virus home to infect their friends, family, or the people they meet. Whether you’re getting socialized or shopping, always wear a mask and frequently wash your hands to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Now, let’s have a look at how to properly and safely wear a face mask.

  1. First, wash or sanitize your hands before and after putting on and taking off your face mask.
  2. Place the mask over your mouth and nose properly and then tie it behind your head, properly.
  3. Always remember, don’t touch the front of your face mask when putting on and taking off it.
  4. After it, again wash or sanitize your hands properly.
  5. If your mask becomes dirty or wet, clean it and switch to a clean one.
  6. Regularly wash your mask with water and soap by hand or in the washing machine, but not to wash with other clothes and keep it separately.

If your face mask is difficult to breathe through or isn’t comfortable or not properly covering your face and nose, consider other options. These face masks are available in many varieties of sizes and styles. You can find more information at
