How is Education Shaping the Northern Powerhouse?

The Northern Powerhouse was created to increase the North’s contribution to the UK economy, rebalance the country and deliver high-quality opportunities for the 16 million people across the North region.

Raising productivity, creating jobs, stimulating growth across the region and attracting significant inward investment are major priorities.

To achieve a meaningful Northern Powerhouse, an essential factor is delivering high quality education and helping to close the gap between the North of England and London, ultimately delivering on the ambition of the Northern Powerhouse.

The North is home to 27 universities, 8 ranked in the UK’s top 50 satisfying over 500,000 students from all around the world (28% of England’s total). Higher education offers the potential for the internalisation of activity, through students, university links and collaborations with local businesses whilst generating further income via overseas students. Two Northern universities sit in the top 5 in England for foreign student numbers. In turn, this creates the incessant demand for student accommodation which helps the Northern cities to thrive through investments. The Northern Powerhouse Independent Economic identified four areas as a primary focus. Advanced manufacturing, energy, digital and health innovation. Capitalising in these areas would permit young people from diverse backgrounds to explore aspirational career pathways, ultimately resulting in job growth in chosen Northern areas. Creating a sustainable relationship between education and industry is the key in achieving this.

University of Liverpool and the University of Manchester along with 6 other universities are a member of the N8 Research Partnership. This is a collaboration of the eight most research extensive universities located in the North of England. The aim of this partnership is to maximise the impact of the research carried out by promoting collaboration and establishing innovative research capabilities whilst driving economic growth.

Particularly across the Liverpool City Region, providing education and research through science and innovation is at the forefront of driving the cities educational opportunities. The Science and Innovation Audit has been published and focusses on Materials Chemistry, Infection and High Performance and Cognitive Computing. The main ambition is to see the Liverpool City Region become world-leading in tackling infectious diseases providing a hub for medical technology and helping to prove Liverpool to be an influential player in science, health and education. Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter caters for the advancements in this sector of research, alongside Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Liverpool Bio Innovation Hub.

The education capability also helps to generate an increasing skilled workforce that plans to attract and retain employers therefore contributing to the collective effect within the city region’s development. This ensures building a robust, relevant and productive workforce; in the North, for the North.
