How Reliable Are BMW Cars?

Feb 12, 2019 by

For decades, BMW cars have been considered some of the most luxurious models on the market. Renowned for its prestigious designs, the brand is a top choice for business owners and those looking to show off their wealth. However, while the brand is synonymous with luxury, it’s also developed a bad reputation over the years.

Questions remain over just how reliable BMW cars are. So, is the brand’s reputation for unreliability justified? Here, we’ll look at just how reliable BMWs are.

Are BMWs reliable?

If you research into the reliability of BMW cars, you’ll quickly discover they do have a pretty bad reputation. In fact, BMW has topped the list as the most unreliable brand for years now. Since 2007, it has rarely scored above average in consumer reports. So, is this reputation fair?

One of the main concerns is that the reliability rating of BMWs is determined by consumer feedback. A lot of the problems cited in previous surveys and studies, are relatively minor. For example, some drivers mark the brand down due to a lack of cupholders. In terms of major faults, the brand doesn’t rate too badly.

So, the results from consumer reports can be misleading. The truth is, BMW models are largely built for performance. This means, parts of the car are made from plastic, rather than more durable, solid materials as the manufacturer tries to save on the cost. However, these plastic areas only make up minor parts of the car. So, if they were to break, the cost of repairs wouldn’t be overly expensive.

Like any expensive car, BMWs need to be well-maintained. This means, making sure you use the right oil, giving the car a regular service and generally looking after it. If you do maintain them properly, they are reliable. So, it’s a question of how well you look after the vehicle, as to how reliable it will be.

Which models are most reliable?

If you are thinking of investing in a BMW, some models are considered more reliable than others. Generally speaking, the older models are the ones which are thought to be the most unreliable. So, ideally, you’ll want to search for models which have been made after 2005.

Interestingly, the BMW 3 Series 2009 model ranked as one of the top 10 most reliable cars in 2018. However, the earlier 3 series models were widely reported as being unreliable. So, it appears that over the years, the brand has made improvements within its design. You can find newer BMW models at affordable prices from companies such as the AA.

Overall, BMW has gained a reputation for being unreliable. However, for many BMW owners, this is an unfair reputation as it largely depends upon how well you look after the car. The newer models in particular are much more reliable than they used to be. So, if you’re thinking of buying a BMW, don’t be put off by the unreliable tag as times have moved on and models are much more reliable than they used to be.
