How to induce emotional and social awareness in children?

Children are vulnerable souls who have no idea about how to express their emotions. Mostly, children will cry and throw a fuss when they are feeling emotional. The lack of emotional expression or social behavior can often lead to parents misunderstanding their children. 

While it is logical for children to learn about social responsibility and emotional behavior at home, teachers can also play their part. Children may be oblivious to numerous things, but they pick up things faster than teachers can anticipate. Hence, it is crucial to add a few activities and books for effective learning. Let’s have a look at a few factors that can help induce emotional and social awareness in children: 

Build feeling through expression 

Children do not have a vast understanding of letting out their emotions. This may be due to the lack of vocabulary that hinders their ability to be expressive. A teacher can help children acknowledge and name their feelings. Different books can help children comprehend their emotions, such as Sel books. However, it can take an ample amount of time before children can figure out their feelings. 

Learning through actions 

Children in their developmental stage tend to learn more through practical examples than books. Most schools use small skits and role-play to make children learn better. If we look at ground –level, the prior learning of a child starts at home.

 Parents and teachers must display their emotions to make a child understand and respond to them better. Effective self-management practices and coping strategies are crucial in making a child strong. Children tend to throw a tantrum when they feel agitated. The leading cause of a tantrum is a lack of emotional control. Hence, it is essential to introduce your child to exciting self-help books. 

Collaborative approach 

Sometimes, a child may not understand the purpose of learning. Building concepts can be a big task. Hence, teachers should have a much more interactive or collaborative approach to keep a child engaged. It is crucial to ask children questions about a book or an interactive role-play. The problems tend to make a child explore the endless opportunities. A child’s brain functions differently altogether; hence, inducing critical thinking can be a task. Asking children to predict a scenario or their thoughts can build consequential thinking.  

Books are a crucial part of a child’s development, and a teacher must focus on introducing a child to interactive books.
