Teeth grinding is usually done unconsciously and when it occurs regularly, it can harm your teeth. It can also expose you to other oral health issues. You may wake up noticing sores in your mouth.

Medically, bruxism is the term given to teeth grinding. Most people do the grinding while asleep and they are oblivious of this many times. It can be caused by sleep apnea, stress, medical conditions, or missing teeth. In this article, we will be discussing how you can stop teeth grinding.

Signs and Symptoms of Teeth Grinding:

Here are the signs and symptoms you should look out for to know if you have teeth grinding:

  • Grinding sounds while asleep
  • Headache- The Bruxism Association states that those who suffer from teeth grinding have three times more tendency to suffer from headaches
  • You may experience toothache usually in the morning after waking up
  • You may have face and temples stiffness after waking up
  • Pains in the jaws while eating, usually at breakfast

  • Raised tissue on the inside of the cheek from biting
  • Temperature-sensitive teeth

How To Stop Grinding Your Teeth

1. Wearing of Night Guard– A night guard will help in protecting your teeth as you grind it at night.  When you visit your dentist, he will recommend a fit guard for you. A night guard is an appliance that fits over your top teeth. It is made of acrylic or plastic. There is no dental medication to stop teeth grinding, however, this product can always be of help.

Note that it won’t stop you from grinding, but you will get assured of protection against an oral problem that could arise from teeth grinding. Your dentist might prescribe muscle relaxants for you. It might reduce the effects of bruxism.

2. Have a Warm Bath Before Bed- When you have a warm water bath before you sleep, it helps in relaxing your jaw muscles. However, you can soak a clean cloth in warm water, and place it to on your jaw. You can also use a heating pad. Note that moist heat is best as it penetrates better.

3. Exercise- As teeth grinding can be caused by stress, involving in a major sweat session can help alleviate bruxism. You can even take a stroll.

4. Stay Relaxed- As anxiety is a risk factor for teeth grinding, getting well relaxed will help in relieving anxiety.

5. Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine- Alcohol and caffeine taking can worsen grinding. You can reduce it by skipping a glass in the evening.

6. Avoid Eating Non-Edible Thing – Eating or chewing pens, pencils and other hard items can make your jaw muscles be used to clenching. This will make you more likely to grind while you sleep. Eat only food.

7. Get a Massage – A good rubdown will help make the rest of your body relax. It does the same job of relaxation to your jaw muscles. Gently massage them when you feel tense.

8. Seek Help- You might need to see a psychologist if you are suffering from severe anxiety. Involving in talk therapy may be helpful in alleviating anxiety. This will in turn help in reducing grinding.

9. Reduce Chewy Foods- Reduce eating kinds of stuff like chewing gum, popcorn, and other chewy foods. This will help in giving your jaw some break and even reduce sore jaw. Ensure you drink plenty of water as dehydration may be linked to teeth grinding.

10. Ensure you avoid clenching your teeth during the day–  If you find yourself grinding during the day, you should train your tongue to rest behind your upper front teeth. Get your lips together with teeth apart, and rest your tongue resting lightly behind the front teeth.
