Alycia Meriweather, 42, is in charge of the Academics, Talent and Strategy divisions in DPS.

Her father, a teacher, and her mother, a school librarian, bought those houses and four others, one by one, and fixed them up.

Meriweather, the new interim superintendent of Detroit Public Schools, sees parallels between her parents’ vision for their block and her own hopes for the school district.

“I saw by hard work and dedication, and a desire for something better, that literally 40 years later, that block is solid, that block is a beautiful place to live, and that you would never, ever know what was there 40 years ago,” she said. “I think all of those experiences showed me what’s possible. …
