J.D. Vance Blasts Kamala Harris and the ‘Childless Left’

Ohio Senate candidate J.D. Vance went after “childless” Democratic leaders like Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg for having “no physical commitment to the future of this country” at a speech in Alexandria, Virginia, this weekend.

He blamed Democrats more broadly for causing the decline of the family: “I think the rejection of the American family,” he said, “is perhaps the most pernicious and evil thing that the Left has done in this country.”

Vance put forth his vision of the American Dream, which he defined as “if you work hard and play by the rules, you can support a middle-class family on a single wage.”

Vance sat down with the American Spectator to discuss the policies he believes will help middle-class families achieve the American Dream. Vance focused on reforming education policy as a solution to the problems families face.

“We have a lot of mismatch between the workers and the jobs that are out there,” he said. “And if we want to close that mismatch, I do think we need better education policy, we need to make it easier for people to get into some of the jobs that are actually out there. And that does require, I think, a response from the government.”

Vance told The American Spectator it’s a “little ridiculous” that “we tell everyone that they have to go get a four-year college degree when there are a lot of companies out there that are desperate for workers.”

“I think that we need to better prepare our workforce to enter the jobs that are actually out there in our society right now,” he said.

Vance said that he would like to reform the way that the federal government handles student loans for undergraduate and graduate degrees. He criticized the Left’s proposal to forgive student debt, saying, “We shouldn’t say that middle class taxpayers who don’t have college degrees should have to pay for it. We should make the folks who caused this problem pay for it.” This includes the universities, he explained.

During his speech, Vance drew attention to cultural threats to the American Dream from the radical Left. “Think of the middle-class people,” he said, “who are affected by this culture war on traditional American values.”

“If you don’t say the right things, if you don’t speak the right words, then you are not welcome in polite society,” he added. “You can’t even work in some of our country’s most elite companies unless you say the things that they want you to say.”

Vance called the culture war a “class war” because the elites use it to punish and control middle-class Americans.

He noted that the Democratic Party’s future leaders, including Vice President Kamala Harris, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, and Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, are all childless. He said having childless leaders is not good or healthy because they have no stake in the future, and only care about themselves.

“The American Dream to the elites is ‘get as much credentials as you can, get as much money as you can, get the most prestigious job, and that’s where you’re gonna find your self-worth,’” he said.

Vance said that the low fertility rate in the U.S. is a “civilizational crisis,” adding, “We should give resources to parents who want to have kids. We should make it easier to raise American families, and we should send the signal to the culture that we are the pro-family party and we’re going to back it up with real policies.”

He floated one proposal to help solve some of America’s problems: give parents extra votes according to the number of children they have.
