Legalize the Brain Drug: 4 Reasons Students should be Allowed to Use Modafinil

Jul 4, 2018 by

Studies have shown that up to one out of every four UK students uses some sort of “study drug” to help them during their studies. Modafinil, originally developed as a drug to treat people suffering from narcolepsy, has also been shown to have offer the benefit of cognitive enhancement, increased awareness and attention, and memory improvement. Despite these benefits, this drug still requires a doctor´s prescription, thus making it hard to obtain for most UK students. Below, we look at four reasons why we believe that Modafinil should be made available to the student population.

Reason #1: Demand is Simply Huge

The so-called “war on drugs” has succeeded in showing that it is virtually impossible to effectively prohibit substances. Whereas addictive drugs do cause all sorts of harm to individuals and society, people continue to find ways to get these drugs. In the case of study drugs like Modafinil, there are actually many positive benefits, ranging from increased alertness and attention to improved memory. For this reason, it is estimated that thousands of students in the U.K. regularly use Modafinil during their time at university.

One report suggests that anywhere between 20 and 25 percent of students at UK universities have used Modafinil recently. To fulfill this demand, there are several marketplaces that sell Modafinil online. Though the UK government tries to regulate these online marketplaces, the huge demand for this study drug means has led several prominent health professionals to argue for the licensing of Modafinil to students in a safe and controlled manner.

Reason #2: It is Safer than Alternative Study Drugs

Adderall is another substance often used as a “study drug” by students across the UK and in other parts of the world. Unlike Modafinil, this drug is actually an amphetamine and words as a strong central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. In the United States, Adderall is considered to be a schedule II controlled substance because of the highly addictive nature of the drug. Modafinil, on the other hand, has a much lower probability to lead to addiction while also having uncommon side effects that are often limited to occasional headaches.

Reason #3: Potential Brain Benefits

Not only does Modafinil help to improve the cognitive function of students, there is also evidence that it also offers important benefits to the brain. One study has shown that Modafinil might actually function as a neuroprotectant due to the high amount of antioxidants it contains. These antioxidants can help to protect brain tissue from free radicals that are known to cause degenerative diseases. Furthermore, this study drug can also help to control impulses in the brain, and has thus been used to help treat alcoholism and drug addiction, both of which are common problems among student populations.

Reason #4: Improved Education

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, Modafinil has the ability to sincerely help students with their studies. Independent research has shown that while this drug was originally designed to help people with Narcolepsy increase their alertness, it also has other positive effects on the brain. One study has shown that this drug can vastly improve reaction time, which is important for students suffering from the stress of managing several classes, a job, and other requirements that come with being a student. Furthermore, another independent study discovered that Modafinil boosted memory function, especially among people who initially had a poorer working memory. This shows that Modafinil might be able to give a boost to students suffering from education disorders that negatively affect their study habits.

Final Words

The high demand for Modafinil, the fact that it is safer than other commonly used study drugs, potential long-term benefits to the brain, and improved cognitive functions are four important reasons why we believe that Modafinil should be made available through controlled programs for UK students.

I have read and learned about the benefits of Modafinil in helping boost your brain functions. Guess they regulate it because of the risk of it being abused. However I do agree that Modafinil is helpful to those who actually need this drug to help them focus.

    The truth about modafinil

I’ve seen many people’s grades actually decreased due to modafinil dependence. I think your statement that it is safer than other alternatives is fairly misleading. It’d be like saying rolling your own cigarettes are a healthy alternative to normal cigarettes, when in fact they are both terrible for your health.

There are real healthy alternatives out there though, for example, BrainZyme, which I can buy from the pharmacy at my university.
