Liberal College 101: Punished for defending free speech

Apr 9, 2016 by

A university is attempting to fire an outspoken, conservative professor who defended a student’s conservative views about marriage.

John McAdams, a tenured associate professor at Marquette University, rebuked teaching assistant Cheryl Abbate in a blog post in 2014 for telling a student his views were unacceptable in a classroom setting.

Now the university is threatening to fire McAdams, who is still suspended from his job, unless he apologizes to Abbate.

But McAdams refuses to do so, and the political science professor remains banned from campus after he was suspended in December 2014.

Marquette, a private Catholic university in Milwaukee, has approximately 11,700 students.

If the university does fire McAdams, that would be a “serious blow” to the rights of faculty at Marquette, says Peter Bonilla of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, or FIRE.
