Metrics That Every Scrum Master Should Consider

Scrum is a framework that involves various policies and practices that can be applied for completing a particular software development project with efficiency and within a specified time. Businesses and organizations looking for a way to complete their assigned projects on time, usually apply the agile methodology for better workflow. A certified scrum master is an individual who possesses the necessary knowledge and ability to apply the agile methodology and helps individuals to work together in a group.

Completion of a certified scrum master certification course helps an individual becoming a certified scrum master through which he or she can handle project work and individuals working within a group effectively.

A team responsible for completing a software development project and applying agile principles work in small time intervals called sprints. The work is completed within such defined intervals for better workflow and delivery of assigned development work. Every scrum master is responsible for ensuring the sprint for completion of a particular part of a project is defined in such a way that employees work with complete satisfaction, with the minimal workload and the project is delivered within a specified time. 

There are certain metrics that every scrum master has to follow for evaluating work progress and team satisfaction. This further has to be communicated to a lead department for better effectiveness in work completed in the future. Some of these metrics are listed below:

• Happiness metric:

Happiness metric aims at evaluating the Satisfaction and happiness level of employees working within a group assigned with particular project work. A scrum master evaluates the happiness level or score of different employees working within a group. He or she analyses whether or not an individual was happy with a sprint time for work completion. Various aspects are analysed which are then compiled to identify the happiness level of employees in a particular workgroup.

• Defects in product development and its density:

Measuring the defects within software development and coding is also a social metric that a scrum master must evaluate and identify. Escaped defects upon programming are identified and compiled to understand their cause and even density. This metric helps in measuring the defects in programming as well as its density to further understand the relation between the progress of completion of a project and problems identified. Measuring the defects is crucial for better future performance.

• Time to market and velocity:

Time to market metric evaluates the time which a team took for completion of a particular software development project until it is delivered to users for revenue generation. A scrum master measures the time taken by the team members in sprints for full completion and delivery of the project to final users. Moreover, he or she is responsible for measuring the velocity of work completion by a team member in a particular sprint. This information is compiled for better future understanding.


This metric measures the revenue which a product was able to generate as compared to the cost associated for its development in sprints.

Obtaining a CSM certification enables an individual to become a certified scrum master for using the above-mentioned project and team performance measuring metrics.
