TEX. STATE BD. OF EDUCATION – STREAMLINING OF SOCIAL STUDIES TEKS (First Reading)

9.12.18 – 8:34 P. M.

In U. S. Government, the reference to Moses was left in the TEKS. The SBOE vote was 7 to 5.

Another victory occurred when the SBOE decided to leave in place the original language in the TEK that discusses Founding Fathers…religious freedom in America…establishment clause and free exercise clause…Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…compare/contrast with phrase ‘separation of church and state.’

REPORT FROM TEX. STATE BD. OF EDUCATION – 9.12.18, 6:03 P. M.

The State Board of Education’s Committee of the Full Board unanimously approved this amendment to the 7th grade Texas history curriculum standards: “Explain the issues surrounding significant events of the Texas Revolution, including the Battle of Gonzales, the siege of the Alamo, William B. Travis’s letter ‘To the People of Texas and All Americans in the World,’ and the heroism of the diverse defenders who gave their lives there; the Constitutional Convention of 1836; Fannin’s surrender at Goliad; and the Battle of San Jacinto.”

CONCLUSION:  The SBOE worked long and hard today with more meetings to follow on Thursday and Friday. So far, they have made some very good decisions. We must remember, however, that the Second and Final Reading of the Social Studies Streamlining of the TEKS will occur at the November 2018 Board meeting.
