Motivate Students to be Excited About STEM

We all know that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is the way of the future. The demand for STEM positions is only rising, and this will continue to rise. Our students today will need to fill these positions and gain proficiency in STEM fields. These occupations are expected to grow by 8.9% between 2014 and 2024.

How can educators today keep students motivated about these fields of study, especially amidst so many distractions? While skills like reading and writing are also significantly important, we can’t underestimate the need for students to learn more about the exciting world of science. If we want our youth of today to be successful tomorrow, we need to encourage students to participate and excel in the sciences. Here are some strategies that highlight the importance of science while drawing in students.

Undo the Stereotype

As much as we hate to admit it, there is a stigma around STEM. Kids naturally bring to mind an image of nerdy scientists thanks to pop culture and the media. This can keep a lot of youth back from pursuing their interests since they’re worried about the perceptions of their peers.

Teachers are at the front of this battle in changing these stereotypes. By explaining the history of science and how it’s affected our world today, educators can show just how fast-paced and exciting the world of science can be. It might help to focus on some of the more “glamorous” aspects of science like forensic science or space travel. Students need to recognize that these industries go beyond the “nerdy” image.

Most of all, show how you’re a positive role model for the world of science. Be excited and energetic when explaining new concepts. Show them just how fun and interesting it will be, and they’ll likely jump in head first.

Include Technology

Like it or not, technology in the classroom is here to stay. Students today are more tech-savvy than ever, and we should cultivate this technology for good. The textbook can only get students so far, so feel empowered to include resources like video tools, online activities, and digital games that add another element to learning.

They want to get their hands dirty and learn from doing. From the tried-and-true baking soda volcano to a mock crime scene, students want to get up close and personal with their activities.

These activities don’t have to be complex or expensive to make an impact. As we said before, there’s a reason the baking soda volcano has survived so long. It shows a chemical reaction in a way that students can actually experience, and this draws them in for more.

Your students have a hunger for new information. There’s no denying that STEM will play a big part in their lives in the future, so why not prep them now with the skills they need to succeed? Even if they decide not to pursue STEM in the future, we can all benefit from understanding the world and technology around us.
