  • Just 7% of Americans believe race should be a major factor in college admissions
  • White people are most likely (78%) to feel that race shouldn’t figure in college admissions, while Asians were least likely to agree with that statement (59%)
  • The survey points to broad opposition to affirmative action in higher education
  • The findings come on the heels of closing arguments earlier this month in a federal lawsuit brought by Asian American students against Harvard University
  • The students claim Harvard unfairly limits how many Asians are accepted

A majority (73 percent) of Americans believe race and ethnicity should not figure in student admissions to colleges and universities, according to a new survey.

A small proportion (7 percent) believe race should be a major factor in college admissions and 19 percent say it should be weighed as a minor factor, according to a Pew Research Center survey of 6,637 Americans.

The survey illustrates a broad opposition to affirmative action – and comes on the heels of closing arguments earlier this month in a federal lawsuit brought by Asian American students against Harvard University that claims the school unfairly limits how many of them are accepted each year.

The survey found that people of all races tend to agree that race should not be weighed in admissions practices, but white adults are the most likely (78 percent) to feel that way, compared to 65 percent of Hispanics, 62 percent of African Americans and 59 percent of Asians.

This chart illustrates how much Americans believe race should factor into college admissions decisions. Overall, a majority of Americans oppose affirmative action, though opinions vary by race and political party
