ODU pays $249K to settle lawsuit from student who claims campus police mishandled rape report

Old Dominion University paid $249,000 to settle a lawsuit that claimed campus police responded to a rape report in 2014 by interrogating the alleged victim for nearly eight hours, according to a school spokeswoman.

But the spokeswoman said the money came with no “admission of wrongdoing.” Giovanna Genard described it as a “mutually agreeable compromise” made to avoid the “expense and uncertainties of trial.”

An attorney for the student who filed the lawsuit noted it was filed with the help of SurvJustice, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping survivors of sexual violence. He declined further comment in light of unspecified terms of the settlement, though.

Initially, the student sought damages in excess of $75,000 and several significant changes to how the campus police operated. Among other things, she wanted ODU to fire campus police Chief Rhonda Harris and require security officials to transport alleged victims of sexual assault to a medical facility capable of collecting forensic evidence.
