Paolo DeMaria’s Ties to Fordham Even Deeper Than We Thought

In an article published this morning for 3rd Rail Politics, we broke the news of the previously undisclosed relationship of new State Superintendent Paolo DeMaria with the domineering Thomas Fordham Institute.  We reported that just prior to his appointment as superintendent, DeMaria, as a Principal Consultant with Education First Consulting LLC, worked as a contractor for the Fordham Institute.  We also reported that DeMaria, even to this day, is listed as a member of the staff of the Fordham Institute.

Today, we are able to report even more.  If you visit the Fordham website, assuming their web monkeys haven’t scrubbed it yet, you would assume that DeMaria co-wrote a paper for Fordham in 2015.  But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

We can now report that during his tenure in the private sector, DeMaria worked hand in glove with Fordham.  For example, on March 14 and 15, 2011 he appeared as a presenter for events at both Cleveland State University and Lorain County Community College.  Both events were funded by and moderated by the Fordham Institute.  The nearly full one and a half hour program can be viewed here.  The slides of the presentation can be viewed here.

On September 23, 2014 DeMaria served as the moderator for a presentation on common core by the Fordham Institute.  The event was held at the John Glenn Center at The Ohio State University.  DeMaria returned once again to the John Glenn Center on September 25, 2015 along with the Fordham Institute and the now defunct Ohio Alliance of Public Charter Schools to discuss the Fordham commissioned CREDO report that unfairly bashes charter schools.

DeMaria and Education First Consulting were apparently well compensated for this work too.  While the Fordham Institute does not break out independent contractors individually on their tax returns, as they should, outside consultants were paid over $784,000 in 2012, over $847,000 in 2013, and over $1.1 million in 2014.  More recent tax returns have not yet been posted.
