Potential GOP base problem for Scott: ‘Anyone have a non-Common Core question?’

Sep 16, 2014 by

Republican Party of Florida Executive Director Juston Johnson visited last week’s Palm Beach County Republican Executive Committee meeting to rally GOP faithful for Gov. Rick Scott’s re-election bid.

But when he asked how many REC members had knocked on doors or made phone calls in the past month for Scott, only about a dozen in the crowd of more than 100 raised their hands.

And when Johnson fielded questions from audience members, five of the first six queries included complaints about the Common Core education standards and Scott’s perceived support for them. Scott has begun to distance himself from the Jeb Bush-backed standards, but not enough to satisfy many at the GOP meeting.

“Anyone have a non-Common Core question?” Johnson finally said.

County GOP Chairwoman Anita Mitchell urged REC members to unite behind Scott.

“I know we all get passionate about our ideology and those things. I just absolutely beg you to keep your eye on the prize,” Mitchell said.
