Receiving PARCC test results could take ‘months’

Aug 25, 2015 by

It’s the second week of school at most school districts across New Mexico, and parents and students are still anxiously awaiting the results for the PARCC tests many of the students took last school year.

Seniors need to pass the test to graduate, and many still don’t know if they should be going on college visits.

The state’s Public Education Department says it doesn’t have a definitive date on when it will get the results, but says it expects to have the answer in September.

“Here we are, going into September, and we don’t know if she’s passed, if she’s failed,” said parent Jessica Ward, whose daughter is set to graduate next May. “We don’t know if we’re going to have a stumbling block around the corner in regards to graduation in May.”

Ward’s daughter is a senior at Cibola High School. Jessica says her daughter wants to study forensics at an out-of-state university, but needs to know if she passed the PARCC test first.

“With college applications starting to be worked on, it’s a little bit of a frustration not knowing where we stand,” she said.

The PED says it expects a timeline for the release of the results next month and expects to receive the final results from Pearson “in the next couple of months.”

Retakes are expected later this fall. The department says it plans to prioritize getting the results to graduating seniors first.

According to the PED, it’s the first time the PARCC exam can be counted toward a requirement to graduate for the class of 2016.
