Role of Cuban mathematicians during Covid-19 pandemic laudedHavana, May 13 (Prensa Latina) Mathematicians’ approach is essential to estimate the trends of the Covid-19 pandemic in Cuba, the dean of the Mathematics and Computing Faculty at the University of Havana, Raul Guinovart, said on Tuesday.

Mathematicians make up the multidisciplinary team that is analyzing, from different approaches, Cuba’s situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the expert noted on the Mesa Redonda (Round Table) radio and TV program. With that purpose, Cuban mathematicians adapted the SIR model to the country’s conditions to make estimates that are compared later with the results from other models, he explained.

According to Guinovart, mathematic models are used to analyze the trends of certain phenomena in real time, in this case, it is the epidemiological situation caused by the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, and ‘to explain it and make predictions, be prepared and predict what may happened’.

About the peak of the disease in Cuba; that is, the time with most active cases, he said that it was expected on May 1, but the data went two steps ahead on the line that represented the unfavorable scenario before that date.

On April 22, the information was near the favorable line of predictions, and on April 27, the updated information about active cases was under the estimated favorable line, he pointed out.

The expert noted that the result was possible thanks to the measures taken by health and government authorities regarding public transportation, commerce, social isolation and the quarantine, as well as the effectiveness of the protocols for treatment and prevention.

Guinovart explained that many math and computing students and professors at the University of Havana are working on models and datasheets to compile all the information updated every day and use it to compare the national situation with what is happening in other countries and even review the trends of the pandemic in several regions in Cuba.
