An Interview with Roya Kligner: Make Them Shine

1) Roya, Guten Morgen, or Good Morning. Could you first tell our readers a bit about yourself and your endeavors in Germany and Europe?

First of all I would like to thank you for this interview. My name is Roya Klingner, Head and Founder of the Global Center for Gifted and Talented Children ( Our center is located in Munich, Germany. In addition I am German Delegate in the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children, Member of Eurotalent and German Liason of SENG, Support Emotional Needs of Gifted. I was diagnosed as Gif ted, when I was 6 years old. It was my big dream to support Gifted Kids, when I grow up and I have fulfilled my dream, as I founded a center 2008 in Bavaria. I am a passionate Children book author and illustrator. My life is dedicated to those Children, who are different from average Children in that age. We call them Gifted, High potential, bright…..

2) Now, tell us about your latest book – Make Them Shine.

My Book “Make them Shine” is the second book from the Series: Make Them Shine. Giftedness Viewed Differently, published by LIT-Verlag in Germany. This book guides teachers and parents in identification of Gifted Children and helps them to understand their social and emotional needs. Authors who have decades of professional experience with Gifted Children and their families, provide practical guidance from different perspectives in areas such as: Identification and Characteristics of Gifted Children Motivation and Underachievement Educational planning and the optimal development of giftedness and talents Parenting concerns Types of gifted programs Consulting Gifted Children. Authors are: Prof. Karen B Rogers, Dr. Monita Leavitt, Prof. Steven Pfeiffer, Prof. Roland Persson, Emilee Valler and I. I am editor of this book too.

3) What point or points were you trying to make in that book?

It was a great project and challenge to bring experts in Gifted Education from all over the world together and work one year on this book. My goal was to create a master piece with diverse views and ideas about this topic. Make them Shine wants to help readers to understand Gifted Children and what they need in life to show their potential and talents best. It is meant to open eyes and help gifted children to shine like a diamond.

4) Many gifted kids I know have no outlet for their skills, talents and abilities. What can the average person or teacher do?

Good question! There are so many ways and possibilities to help gifted kids. First of all, we have to see where we are and which conditions we have. Then we have to ask our gifted child about its interests and passions. In our book there are several practical guides for parents and teachers. It is important to see each gifted child as a very special unique individual. We all know that Gifted Children are not all the same and they are different. In addition I can recommend your book with the title: The Nurturing of Talent, Skills and Abilities published by Nova Science Pub Inc.

5) It seems to me that gifted kids are often neglected in the big scheme of things- your thoughts?

Yes, they are. In the last years I have been in so many countries around the world and it seems that the problems of gifted children are global. Most of them are misunderstood or ignored. Some teachers have no idea what to do with a gifted child in a regular classroom. In some countries, they are just interested in performance and talent rather than the child and their emotional needs. I know so many gifted kids, who are suffering in the education system worldwide. Gifted learners, although possessing higher levels of intelligence than their peers, are disadvantaged in the sense that they frequently do not, or are not given the opportunity, to reach their full potential (Farmer, 1993). Krause, Bochner and Duchesne (2003:212) report that gifted learners are labeled, along with ‘gifted’, ‘talented’ or ‘creative’, as ‘underachievers’, ‘educationally disadvantaged’ or ‘special needs”.

This is primarily because schools and teachers are unaware of how to appropriately cater to these learners (See Diezmann & Watters, 2001; Langrehr, 2006). Gifted children have special learning needs, which if not met, can lead to frustration, a loss of self-esteem, boredom, laziness and underachievement (Crocker, 2004; after Knight & Becker (2000)). We have to support them, wherever they are and this is what i am dedicated to for the rest of my life. My life for helping gifted children worldwide.

6) What other projects do you have going on?

I have so many projects at the moment. The best of them is that we have started book number three from this series with experts in the field of creativity. Our book will be published in 2016 with the title: “Creativity in Gifted Education”.

We are going to celebrate the International Day of Gifted Children on August 10th. More information about this event will be on our website.

8) What have I neglected to ask?

I really like this question but I think you forget to ask me about what I wish. I wish all gifted children happiness and success. and my advice to them is simply this: “You have a DREAM? Go for it, fight for it, live for it, …step by step….Never give up!”

They should know that they are not alone and I care for them.
