School district’s palm scanner plan raises privacy concerns

LOS LUNAS, N.M. – The Los Lunas school district in New Mexico is considering installing new technology to crack down on apparent school lunch fraud.

KOAT palm scanThere don’t appear to be any cases of actual fraud, but the technology is designed to prevent any would-be food scammers from doing their damage. You know, just in case.

The school district’s plan is to use palm scans that will match students’ hot lunch account numbers. The system will safeguard against students replicating fingerprints and stealing someone’s identity, according to the district.

Is that how desperate students have become for a free lunch – they’re replicating fingerprints now?

Parents are questioning the need – not to mention the privacy concerns – and that has halted the plan, at least temporarily.
