Crime. Abuse. Poverty. Neglect.

For many Detroit children, these are not just words. These concepts are familiar — personal, even.

We brag about how growing up in the Motor City makes you tough. But poverty and violence demand a high toll.

Over a nearly seven-year period, the City of Detroit saw more than 33,000 cases of children 17 or younger victimized by crime.

The average age of the victim? Thirteen.

Forty-three percent of those crimes were violent: homicide, sexual assault, aggravated assault and robbery.

Detroit has been called a city on the rise, but are our children climbing too?
